I have Become so Many Photographs, 1997

My own image, slowed to 2%, gazes at the viewer behind a false wall on a soil-covered floor, amid the sound of a city construction site. The image blinks in real time every seven seconds, challenging the historically biased misrepresentations that are often projected on my identity via my visible difference as the ‘static Indian' or hapless remainder from a lost culture. The self-portrait stares back at the viewer, alluding to the constant reconstruction and agency of a contemporary, changing and authentic subject.
