Speaking in Anishinabemowin, my mother Rose Elijah Manning-baa tells and re-tells the story of her life, and her love of her language. She offers multiple translations in English, each one different. The separate tracks are layered to build a sensuous chorus of at times indistinguishable utterances, with traditional singing by Cody Cardinal from Saddle Lake, Alberta, in the background. As someone who cannot fluently speak or understand my mother’s language, the work explores the notion of exile within my own homeland and the gaps in thought that arise as I strain to communicate with an imposed colonial tongue.
