Decoy, 1993
Installation with soft sculpture and found objects
Evoking the contradictions of living in-between Anishinaabe and western worlds, decoy duck heads strangled by fishing wire are suspended over a bear skin rug, where randomly placed letters emerge from a several layers of soil. The soil came from my mother’s birthplace at Aazhoodenang (Stoney Point First Nation). The work touches on written and unwritten languages, that is, orally communicated languages and their interrelational community-oriented practices juxtaposed to colonial logics, individualism, and land theft.
