Braid, 1992
Installation
Created in memory of my eldest sister, Marina, a single braid of hair hangs upside down suspended in a darkened room, lit by a single beam of light. The cut braid represents the passage of time, death, loss and grief while pointing to the rending violence of colonialism, cultural loss and disruption of Indigenous identity in the residential school system. The looping soundtrack is of water.
